Random Reader Remarks: Paula Spencer by Roddy Doyle

Paula Spencer (Viking Adult) written by Roddy Doyle, is currently available in paper and digital formats (Kindle for $9.99). Didn’t bother to check anywhere else.

I remember reading somewhere that JK Rowling was a big fan of this author. Doyle also penned The Commitments which was also made into a hit film of the same name (never seen it). So I started browsing to see which book to start with first and came across this reader’s comments.

About Roddy Doyle’s Paula Spencer [2007]

I’m surprised to be recommending a book about an alcoholic middle aged mum so enthusiastically, but if you read Paula Spencer and don’t love it, there’s a good chance you’re an idiot.

Bought. Synopsis & excerpt of Paula Spencer

You should watch the film when you can. It’s hilarious (that’s if you don’t mind a fair amount of swearing) and heart-warming with a great soundtrack.

I thought for a moment, judging by the book cover, it was Paula Spencer’s biography of Roddy Doyle. Heh. Regardless, I haven’t read Doyle’s books for ages. I tried a couple but never really quite succeeded. I can’t remember why, though.

I’ve heard his books are intense. Will look for the movie, thanks!

  3. Rosario says:

Well, I bet I’d be an idiot then. I read the original book about Paula Spencer, The Woman Who Walked Into Doors, and hated every second of it.

@Rosario: Oh noes! *lowering my expectations*
