New Books

These are the books that I bought today. I consider all except one impulsive purchases. I seem to be the mood for fantasy novels these days. Actual title and author names below. Any of these spark interest? Already bought?

1. Here, There Be Dragons by James A. Owen (YA)

2. Ivy Cole and the Moon by Gina Farago (Horror)

3. Compass Rose by Gail Dayton (Fantasy)

4. Greywalker by Kat Richardson (Fantasy)

I’m kinda second guessing my purchase of Gail Dayton’s book. I’ve seen good reviews on reader blogs and then I glanced at the Amazon reviews and sorta cringed at the negative reviews there. And Ivy Cole and the Moon was a recommend at Barnes & Noble. Hey, took a chance. I’ve just about had it with werewolves and vampires and all other supernatural creatures. I bought Greywalker because the blurb made it sound good and I read a couple of chapters in the store. I’ll see how well it entertains.

As for ebooks, I did get Stephen King’s Lisey’s Story at SimonSays.com for $11.04 here. I’ve never really read Stephen King. I’ve seen a bunch of his movies with The Shawshank Redemption my favorite. The only other King novel in my stack is The Stand.

You’ll have to tell me how the Ivy Cole is. I’ve been thinking about getting it. I liked Compass Rose and have Greywalker tbr.

  2. Kailana says:

I haven’t read any of those books.

I’ve Greywalker on my wishlist, but it’s a trade paperback, isn’t it? Sigh.

I have the Dayton book TBR, and I remember seeing the Owens book at the bookstore. I’m on the fence about the Stuart book. If I see a copy at the library, I’ll pick it up, but I’m not in a rush to read it. Haven’t been that impressed with the few Stuart books I’ve tried.

I have picked up and put down the Compass Rose so many times because I just don’t think I can get into the polyamorous marriage(s) that seem to be the focus of the book. I am tempted to buy the latest Bujold. AAR readers are likening it to Sharon Shinn.

I will be buying myself a copy. I read the first chapter at the store. Maybe you all should do a Bujold week. Have you read her series books? Featuring Miles? I have them all – just need to set aside a time to read them all. Sigh.

  7. Jane says:

I am embarassed to say that I have never read a Bujold book. The Miles series looks like such a committment!

    Jane & Keishon,

I have started Bujold’s The Sharing Knife and am loving it! Of course, you should take my opinion with a grain of salt or even a whole cup full, since I am a Bujold fan. I haven’t read Shinn (she’s TBR) so I can’t really compare. The setting is utterly different from the Miles books and the Chalion books, and seems a lot lighter than both so far, imo.

Jane — you could start with a Miles short story…and a couple of them used to be posted on at Baen’s free online library 🙂 The Mountains of Mourning drops you relatively early in the series, and is less than 100 pages long, I think.

There, my book pimping is done for the day!

A Bujold fan speaks and I listen. Thanks. I plan to get my copy after work today.

I recently bought Greywalker and The Compass Rose myself but—surprise!—I haven’t read them yet. The Compass Rose I bought because I keep seeing such praise for the book. I’m a big fan of romantic fantasy so I figured I’d give it a try. I hadn’t heard about the Ivy one so I’ll have to check that out…Stephen King’s Lisey’s Story has been getting good reviews and I have a 40% off coupon from Borders so maybe I’ll pick that up too…*sigh* I just can’t seem to stop buying more books!
